Will Playing An Instrument Boost My Acting Career?

Did you learn to play guitar, flute, ukelele or even a recorder at school and not continue? Maybe it's time to dust off that instrument and recap those notes. Being able to play a musical instrument can increase your chances of getting acting jobs – actor-musicians have never been in more demand. As I search through the castings for films, theatre and even adverts I am seeing more and more companies looking for actors that can play an instrument. Last night I went to watch welsh Theatr Na Nog's Eye of the Storm, a fantastic brand new musical in which the sound track of songs was played by the actors live on stage. Every actor at some point played an instrument.

Although actors playing instruments has been common for a while in mid scale touring shows it is now not uncommon for the bigger musicals. To be cheesy and coin a musical phrase - as an actor every string you can add to your bow will increase your chances of work. The casting director may be struggling to choose between you and another talented actor, they see that you can play guitar and the job is yours. You dont have to be the next Mozart. I read of an actor today that lied in an audition and said he could play the harmonica, then on the way home bought a harmonica and taught himself before rehearsals begun! Whilst I don't suggest you lie at an audition, it's a great example of how easy it could be to pick up a new skill. If your serious about an acting career, especially in theatre, I would definately suggest learning an instrument. Look for a short course, local weekly classes, online courses or spend some time on Youtube and teach yourself. A simple search for musical instrument lessons or short courses in your area will bring up lots of results.
